Welton Johnson

Life High School Oak Cliff Names New Head Football Coach

Life High School Oak Cliff recently named Welton Johnson as its next head football coach. During his time at Life School, Johnson made an immediate impact, serving as the Varsity Quarterbacks Coach and Middle School Offensive Coordinator, earning recognition as the Life School Oak Cliff Assistant Coach of the Year. This year, Johnson was the Varsity Quarterbacks Coach and the Middle School Head Coach, leading the team to the first undefeated football season in school history. Coach Johnson served in various coaching roles at Newman International Cedar Hill from 2017 to 2022. While in his role as Varsity Offensive Coordinator in the 2019/2020 season and as Varsity Head Coach in 2021/2022, Coach Johnson secured two TCSAAL state championship titles.

“To say I’m excited is an understatement,” stated Johnson. “I get to wake up every day and do what I love, which is to change lives and give back. To do so in the Oak Cliff area and for Life School is like a match made in heaven. A supportive administration and kids eager to win on and off the field make it even more exciting. My intentions as the head coach are to teach our kids how to win and handle winning correctly. Not just on the football field but in the classroom, around campus, in the community, when nobody’s watching and just in life.”

Coach Johnson played at the collegiate level at Southeastern Oklahoma State University, then continued playing professional arena football. After a successful playing career, Welton transitioned into coaching and sports performance training. For five years, he served as a Sports Performance Trainer while coaching with the Deion Sanders Truth Organization, honing his skills in player development.

Johnson earned two bachelor's degrees in communication and recreation from Southeastern Oklahoma State University. He is married to Amanda, and they have three children: Camren (14), Channing (8), and Willow (4); both Camren and Channing attend Life School and play sports, and Life School looks forward to Willow joining the family next year.

Athletic Director Scott Thrush said, “We are excited to welcome Coach Welton Johnson as our new head football coach. With a proven track record of leadership, vision, passion for the game, and relationship-building with parents,  students, and stakeholders, Johnson brings a wealth of experience and will elevate the Lions. He will bring lots of enthusiasm and excitement to Life School, and we look forward to the positive impact he will undoubtedly have on our student-athletes, football program and our entire Life School Oak Cliff campus.”
