Life School has made transportation more accessible for its special education students thanks to a $50,000 grant from the Hillcrest Foundation. The funding has supported the purchase of a dedicated bus to transport students with special needs, particularly for field trips and other off-campus activities.
The Hillcrest Foundation, established in 1958 by Mrs. W.W. Caruth, Sr. (Mrs. Earle Clark Caruth), supports Texas charitable organizations that advance education, promote health, and relieve poverty, primarily in Dallas County and surrounding areas.
In the previous school year, Life School submitted a grant application to the Hillcrest Foundation to secure funding for a district-wide special needs bus, aimed at improving transportation access for more students. This goal was successfully achieved in January 2025.
“We are truly honored that a well-trusted organization such as the Hillcrest Foundation chose to serve and meet the transportation needs of our deserving students alongside us,” said Eddie Davis, Chief Development Officer.
Life School received a new bus designed to accommodate four students in wheelchairs and 12 additional passengers. This bus will serve the entire district and be used for field trips, special events, and transportation for the 18+ program.
“At the high school level, we have our 18-plus program in which the goal is to use that bus during the day to take them to visit a job where they can learn a skill,” said Candace Johnson, Director of Special Education.
The bus will be ready to take students this school year. This addition will not only improve accessibility but also ensure that more students can participate in off-campus learning experiences, events, and programs with greater ease and comfort.
