Life School Carrollton Candy Election

Sweet Democracy in Action: Life School Carrollton Hosts Candy Election

On election day, Life School Carrollton turned democracy into a sweet lesson for its students by hosting a candy election, allowing students the opportunity to experience the voting process in a fun and engaging way. The event was made extra special with a visit from Carrollton Mayor Steve Babick, who announced the winning candy and shared an inspiring message about the importance of civic participation.

Students eagerly cast their ballots, choosing between Skittles and Starburst. Each student checked into the voting site, cast their vote on a computer and received an “I Voted Today” sticker when they were done.

Mayor Babick joined the students in voting and officially announced the winner - Skittles. The mayor also took the opportunity to speak with the fifth and sixth-grade students, highlighting the importance of making their voices heard in decisions that shape their communities.

"What an excellent life lesson experience for the kids as they exercised their vote in an augmented reality. They are such smart kids with great questions.  Thank you for allowing me to be part of this experience for the kids," said Mayor Steve Babick.

To wrap up the event, the school celebrated by giving each student their own bag of Skittles, ensuring everyone enjoyed a sweet reward for participating in the democratic process.

"The candy mock election was an awesome experience for students because it made learning about voting, democracy, and civic responsibility engaging and accessible. By using something as fun and relatable as candy choices, students could easily understand key concepts like campaigning, voting procedures, and majority rule without the pressure of a real election,” said Life School Carrollton Principal Jennifer Villavaso. “ The activity also allowed students to practice decision-making, discuss their choices, and experience the excitement of tallying votes, which made the whole process memorable and educational."
