Life High School Oak Cliff (LHSOC) and Life High School Waxahachie (LHSW) Health Care students gained valuable insight from the Talent Department (Human Resources) in January. Central Office staff gave feedback on student resumés, participated in mock interviews, and provided students with real-world practice.
Dr. Amanda Andrews, Head Athletic Trainer at LHSOC, wanted to make sure that her students were well prepared for life after high school, so she led a session on workplace professionalism in her Health Care class. She walked them through the process of crafting a resumé, and offered tips on appropriate attire and behavior during interviews. Even though Dr. Andrews led a lesson on the topic, she wanted to give LHSOC and LHSW students “real-world” experience.
“Ultimately, we wanted to give them [the students] real-life experience of going into a job,” said Dr. Andrews.
True to Life School’s culture — the central office team was happy to pitch in. On Wednesday, January 22, over 30 students visited the Central Office with resumés in hand, dressed professionally from head to toe, ready to learn. Then, the talent team got to work.
“We wanted them [the students] to feel ready for life,” said Devonne Hutson, Director of Talent.
The Talent team began with a short presentation about getting a job, dress code, and working with others in the workplace. After the presentation, students split into two stations: one for resumé reviews and the other for mock interviews.
During the mock interviews, each student was interviewed for three minutes, where they answered two common interview questions typically asked in real-world settings. Meanwhile, at the resumé station, students submitted their resumés to the Talent team, who provided detailed feedback—highlighting strengths and offering suggestions on how to refine key areas to make their resumés more appealing to potential employers.
“Some of them were super nervous going into it, and they felt very relaxed afterwards,” said Dr. Andrews. “The talent team was happy to lend their expertise, helping the students build confidence and better equip themselves for the next chapter in their careers.”
“We really enjoyed being able to connect with students, so it was gratifying for us to be able to contribute to their education,” said Hutson.
