Life High School Students Floral Design

Life School Secondary Students Participate in Floral Design Course

Closing the opportunity gap for students is an essential part of Life School’s strategic plan. For secondary students, this means ensuring that every student is fully prepared to enter college, the workforce or military as they graduate from high school. Life School celebrates the diverse population of students’ strengths, abilities and interests by offering a wide variety of College Career and Military Readiness (CCMR) courses.

One of the most unique course offerings Life School offers is a floral design course. Started approximately four years ago, this course is offered at both Life High School Oak Cliff and Waxahachie. Students who complete the course will receive either a Career and Technical Education (CTE) or Fine Arts credit, depending on their individual graduation plan.

Course principles go beyond just how to make flower arrangements. Students learn how to most efficiently use plants in their arrangements by studying the life cycle of plants. They also investigate a variety of flowers and foliage to increase their botanical vocabulary. While they primarily prefer to work with fresh flowers, they also often use silk flowers which offer an advantage due to their longevity.

In addition to learning how to cultivate, design and deliver arrangements, students learn the many facets of actually managing a floral business, including finances, inventory marketing and business partnerships.

One of the program primary customers is the school itself. Students are often commissioned to create all sorts of creations. Homecoming is a particularly busy season as floral design students use their knowledge to make mums and boutonnieres for fellow students. They also design arrangements for holidays such as Thanksgiving, Christmas, and Valentine’s Day while their creations are particularly popular for Teacher and Staff Appreciation events.

Additional customers include local Chambers who often commission the floral design students to create arrangements for their luncheons, auctions and other events. Floral design is one of many CTE programs offered at Life School. To view a complete list of CTE offerings…https://lifeschool.net/documents/parents/course-guide/2021-2022%20-%20Course%20Guide.pdf
