Back to School 2020

General Information

Attendance Policy

With the first day of school quickly approaching, we wanted to share the requirements for your child to get attendance credit during remote learning. The Texas Education Agency has required that students engage daily with their Learning Management System (LMS) in order to receive attendance credit. The following information details Life School’s daily engagement requirements for all remote instruction during the 2020-2021 school year.

First Day of School Requirements

Students will be required to complete their attendance assignment starting the first day of remote learning on August 19, 2020. For the first day of school only, students will need to complete their attendance requirements by 12:00 NOON. Following the first day of school, students will be able to complete their daily attendance requirements between 12:00 AM and 11:59 PM.

Kinder – 6th Grade Instructions

Students are required to complete the assignment titled Daily Attendance located on the Classroom tab under Resources in Google Classroom for their homeroom teacher. This assignment will automatically be time-stamped once it is completed. Students are required to complete this daily between 12:00 AM and 11:59 PM in order to be counted present for that day. Assignments completed outside of that timeframe will not be accepted and will result in an absence. Please watch this informational video for instructions on how to complete the daily attendance assignment in Google Classroom.

7th -12th Grade Instructions

Students are required to complete the assignment titled Daily Attendance Assignment located on the homepage of each class period in Canvas. These assignments will automatically be time-stamped once they are completed. Students are required to complete this daily between 12:00 AM and 11:59 PM in order to be counted present for that day. Assignments completed outside of that timeframe will not be accepted and will result in an absence. Students in grades 7-12 must complete separate daily attendance assignments for all 8 class periods. Failure to do so will result in an absence for any period in which the assignment was not completed. Please watch this informational video for instructions on how to complete the daily attendance assignment in Canvas.

90% Rule & Course Credit

The minimum attendance for class credit rule of TEC 25.092 will be in effect for the 2020-2021 school year. In order for students to receive course credit or be promoted to the next grade level, they must be in attendance 90% of the school year. For remote students, that means they must complete the required daily attendance assignment from their homeroom teacher for grades K-6 and for all courses in 7-12.

State law provides that credit for courses for high school graduation are to be awarded based on a student’s demonstrated proficiency in the essential knowledge and skills for the course. Students must earn 70% or higher and be in attendance at least 90% of the school year in order to receive course credit. Please refer to the Student Handbook for further details regarding promotion and retention.
